Genesis Mining, a popular Cloud Mining company based out of Iceland had a ‘Bankers against Bitcoin’ marketing campaign in New York this week during Consensus 2018. Consensus is the yearly Blockchain / Cryptocurrency conference organised by CoinDesk and this year saw an attendance of over 8,500 people. The company also launched a website bankersagainstbitcoin.org for the campaign.

Genesis Mining hired over 100 fake protestors to execute this campaign, promoting cryptocurrencies. The Cryptocurrency industry has been frustrated with people like Warren Buffet, Jamie Dimon and Bill Gates who have made baseless statements against Cryptocurrencies in the past. Genesis went after them and the incumbent banking industry in general.

The protestors had several boards like ‘We opened those bank accounts on accidents!’ Referring to the Wells Fargo scam. Another sign read ‘Paper checks use less electricity.’ Anther person had the sign ‘We thought this was a bubble!’ Taking a dig at everyone in the traditional finance industry who called it a bubble.

Marco Streng, the CEO Genesis Mining in an official statement on the website said:

Legacy industries that have gone unchallenged for decades will soon begin to see their monopoly slip away. The consumer abuse that’s been possible due to a lack of competition is over. The biggest competitor big banks have ever faced has arrived and it’s not a company or organization, it’s a decentralized technology. It will soon no longer be possible to charge the poorest people in the world exorbitant fees to send money back home to support their families.

He also took a jab an Jamie Dimon directly with the following statement:

As Jamie Dimon once said “Silicon Valley is Coming to Eat Our Lunch”. Well Jamie, and all the others who stand to be disrupted – Bitcoin will be coming for a lot more than just your lunch if you fail to adapt to the new world we live in.

Genesis Mining managed to turn a lot of heads with their well timed and well orchestrated campaign which received a lot of coverage worldwide. Another Crypto company, Bitmex had a campaign at Consensus where they flashed three Lamborghinis. This was another satirical campaign referring to the ‘When Lambo’ meme popular among Crypto Traders.
